With Vancouver’s inaugural HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series just over six months away, tickets for the weekend-long event are available as of today.
The tournament, dubbed Canada Sevens, Vancouver, will be held at B.C. Place Stadium from Saturday, March 12 to Sunday, March 13. It features 45 matches of fast-paced rugby played by the top 16 national teams, coupled with a major fan experience festival.
Organizers are currently selling the two-day, weekend-long tournament passes, beginning at $89, while single-day tickets will be released on Tuesday, November 17, although this depends on remaining availability following the current phase of sales.
To date, demand for tickets has been brisk, with over 10,000 tickets sold within the first 24 hours of the week-long early bird sales window.
“We are thrilled by the pre-sale results and are looking forward to seeing the numbers and fan base grow as tickets go on sale today to the public,” said Bill Cooper, CEO of Canada Sevens, Vancouver, in a statement.
“Our suites sold out in less than two days and the interest from rugby fans was further demonstrated by the enthusiastic response to early bird sales.”
The 2015-2016 Sevens Series circuit kicks off in Dubai on December 4 before traveling to Cape Town, Wellington, Sydney, Las Vegas, Vancouver, Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris and London over the course of six months. B.C. Place Stadium’s new playing surface installed just before the FIFA Women’s World Cup also meets World Rugby standards.
The tournament just comes ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, when rugby will be introduced as an Olympic competition sport. Both the men’s and women’s national rugby teams are supported by Own the Podium as they have been deemed as potential medal contenders in the 2016 Games.
Canada is a strong player in rugby sevens and has competed in every Sevens World Series since the inaugural tournament in 1999.
The rugby variety is played with only seven players per side, as opposed to the usual fifteen, and has a shorter duration than the traditional match. It holds a strong following across Asia, Europe, Australia, UAE, South Africa and New Zealand.
