The iPhone 6s launched today, September 25, and as usual, people didn’t disappoint with their frenzied anticipation for the latest incarnation of the iconic smartphone.

The lineup was reasonably calm and civil – Apple’s reservation system to pre-order the iPhone has made camping out for days in front of the store a thing of the past.

Staff were on hand to offer hot beverages to customers waiting in line. How lovely.

Inside the mall, a second lineup was formed with Apple employees checking people’s reservations. A  certainty that they were getting their phones – and getting them first – seemed to make the people standing in line relaxed, calm, and even cheerful.

But why would anyone wait in line to be first? What’s the purpose? For Brazilian student Renato Ricardo, it was for practical reasons and to be the envy of his friends.

“In my country, it’s quite hard to get an iPhone 6s, since the launch isn’t the same as in North America. We have to wait sometimes, like, three or four months to get one and the price is higher than here.”

“It’s an opportunity and I couldn’t lose that.”

He added he only waited in line for a few minutes because the reservation system allowed things to move quickly.

The newest features of the iPhone 6s include 3D touch, which senses the pressure of your touch, allowing different features to be activated, a 12 megapixel camera, 4K video capabilities, and claims of 70 to 90 per cent faster speeds.

Reservations are closed, but you can reserve an iPhone 6s for tomorrow if you missed the boat today.
