In Vancouver, the lifestyle warrants a casual way of dressing…and local street style photographers have had to embrace it as much as possible through photography.

While it’s unusual to see show-stopping fashion here, there will be the rare person who surprises us while they’re just casually walking down the street–even one amazing outfit can be head-turning.

That’s why when we decided to head to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) with our friends, Meagan Faye of Living Boldly, Alexa Suter of Love, Alexa, and Cristina Samper Pearl of Fluent Events, we know we’d be met with the street style playground of our dreams.

We’ve compiled a few of our favourite street style trends spotted at NYFW and ones that you can incorporate into your own looks right now. We’ve also handpicked a few of our favourite local brands, boutiques, and bigger retailers that can help you get the looks pronto, whether it be for the upcoming Vancouver Fashion Week, or if you just want to fuel your fall wardrobe with a dose of sophisticated chic.

Fringe

There’s nothing more interesting than capturing the movement of fringe. If you want to stand out at fashion week, this trend is a true winner this season. We spotted it EVERYWHERE in New York, from bold versions on jacket sleeves to subtle side slits on skirts to more pared-down iterations on bags.

Get the look: You can get this look at just about every price point but if you don’t have a strong commitment to it, it’s better to find a less expensive version. If you want to make a big statement, go for bold fringe on a top, skirt or even this fringe set from Zara. If want to keep the trend understated (as many did in NYC), you can incorporate it through an accessory without overcommitting. Modaselle has a great Proenza Schouler fringe bag that embraces the trend.

Comical prints

Pop patterns and comical prints made a huge appearance at NYFW. We love them because they add a playful element that is undeniably fun to photograph. If you want to be playful for fashion week, this is a great trend to incorporate and just have fun with. Or, if you want to try the trend this fall, keep your outfit understated and incorporate a comical accessory.

Get the look: Simons is doing a great take on the comical print clutch this season and Nordstrom Vancouver has a really fun phone case too. If the comical print is a little too much for you, try a graphic tee from High Street Fashion Stores or Alex S. Yu.

Swap Watch is also another great brand if you just want to add punch to your look through an accessory. You can customize your own watch online with a picture straight from your Instagram account or head over to Blue Ruby to pick one up locally.

Seventies Flashbacks

The 70s are back in a big way. And while some takes on the trend might be unappealing, these New Yorkers showed us how to do it right. Think suede skirts and knee-high boots, leather colour-blocking, and side-slit skirts.

Get the look: Zara has the 70s trend down to a T, from jackets to dresses, and everything in between.

Bold Eyewear
If there’s one constant in our street style photography, it’s bold eyewear. Why? It just completes the look and adds polish. We spotted a ton of cat eye and round frames at fashion week this season.

Get the look: Look no further than The Optical Boutique for fashion-forward eyewear. Sue of The Optical Boutique has been dressing the eyes of Vancouver’s most fashion-forward for over 25 years and is a true style icon herself.

Sporty Chic

The street style crowd at Tommy Hilfiger brought a whole new definition to sporty chic. Our shift in culture demands comfort as luxury (yes, even at fashion week) and even the biggest fashion influencers attest to this. We loved seeing so many youthful silhouettes and playful mixing of primary colours. This was definitely the most interesting street style scene to photograph.

Get the look: This dress by Fyodor Golan is available at Wardrobe Apparel and fits the sporty chic bill perfectly. If you want to go for a more casual take on the sporty chic trend, try a duster coat and kicks this fall.

Playful Prints and Shapes

You can never go wrong with a playful print or bold shape that grabs attention. Afterall, there’s no better way to brighten up a look on a grey day. While we tend to reach for richer tones and understated silhouettes in the fall months, it’s nice to mix it up with vibrant colours, prints and shapes here and there too.

Get the look: Wardrobe Apparel curates lines for the fashion-forward woman in mind. I love that they’re carrying Fyodor Golan because it’s the perfect go-to brand if you want to have fun with fashion. Alex S. Yu is another favourite among locals with his exaggerated silhouettes and light-hearted take on fashion.

The Faux Furball

A theme of furballs and pom-poms surfaced at NYFW. While we can’t say where this trend came from, you can be sure our camera will be aiming for it this season because it adds a punchy and unexpected element of fun. Many women were tying them to purses and clutches (some were even multi-coloured).

Get the look: You can find faux versions of the furball at the new Nordstrom Vancouver.

Shoulder Draping

Shoulder draping never really goes out of style and proves to be a go-to look season after season, especially in more mild weather, but there’s no better time to embrace the trend than in the transitional months of fall. While it’s one of the most interesting seasons to get dressed for, it can also be hardest to make the switch. Incorporating a draped jacket allows you to stay warm and embrace the new season without fully committing yet.
