We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re on Granville Island for an early morning bite at Edible Canada.

Early risers will appreciate Edible Canada‘s weekend brunch service, as the Johnston Street bistro swings open its doors at 9 a.m., on both Saturday and Sunday.

Situated across the road from the Public Market on Granville Island, Edible Canada is a welcoming eatery that focuses its attention on new Canadian cuisine, as well as sourcing as many quality, local ingredients as possible.

In addition to offering a lunch and dinner menu, both which are full of enticing market-fresh seasonal cuisine, Edible Canada, under the guidance of Chef de Cuisine Alvin Pillay, also offers a fantastic brunch spread come the weekend.

Relying on seasonal and local produce predominately farmed in B.C. means the menu at Edible Canada changes regularly. Despite these menu changes brunch goers can still expect to find a range of brekkie and lunch time driven plates, like an organic granola bowl ($10), Hazelmere Hash ($16), Wild Mushroom Benny ($16), House Smoked Salmon Benny ($17), Quebec Duck Poutine ($16), Farmer’s Harvest (daily preparation of organic vegetables $16), Beef Shortrib Sandwich ($18), and more.

Brunchers who are in the mood for a big breakfast type of meal should order one thing, and one thing only, and that is the EC Signature Breakfast ($16). Comprised of farm fresh scrambled eggs, double smoked bacon, Two Rivers sausage, stewed chickpeas, and the choice of duck fat potatoes or a buttermilk biscuit, this hearty plate is deliciously simple.

Yes, the EC Signature Breakfast consists of your typical brunch fare, but at Edible Canada this dish is executed incredibly well. The scrambled eggs are fluffy, the bacon is crisp and salty, the sausage is juicy and wonderfully porky, and the duck fat potatoes are, to be perfectly honest, unbelievably good.

Don’t fret if your meal doesn’t come with these tasty morsels, they can always be ordered as a side, in the form of Duck Fat Fries.

From the bar, diners can find an array of beverages, ranging from the light and refreshing to the strong and spirited. Those seeking a little morning buzz should dive straight into either a Maple Bacon Caesar (Iceberg Vodka, Clamato, Worcestershire, candied bacon, and Almola Caesar rim) or a sparkling Mimosa (Stellar’s Jay Brut and freshly squeezed OJ), both which are priced at $7.

For the coffee-loving folk, there are a bounty of caffeinated drinks (French press, espressos, Americanos, lattes, and cappuccinos), and for the straight-laced a list of sodas and juices.

Aside from a reliable menu, Edible Canada at the Market also harbours an expansive patio. In the warmer months, when the sun filters down through the trees Edible Canada’s patio, with its view of Granville Island Market, is an especially lovely place to indulge in a spot of brunch. Even when the weather begins to turn the bistro kindly offers its guests blankets for a little extra warmth.

With polite and attentive service, a prompt kitchen to table turn-around, delicious fare and comfortable seating both inside and out, Edible Canada is a great place to brunch and to get your morning going, especially if you’re planning on heading over to the Granville Island Public Market.
