Retired American athlete and television personality Caitlyn Jenner will be coming to Vancouver on February 23, 2016 to talk about her journey of transitioning into a transgender woman.

Caitlyn Jenner, formerly Bruce Jenner, first struck fame in the 1970s with her Olympic gold medal win in the decathlon competition of the Montreal Games.

She of course revealed her gender identification during an ABC News 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer this past spring and was the July cover of Vanity Fair, which revealed her new name and look.

Weeks after the magazine cover was released, she launched her E! Network television show I Am Cait – a program that documents her life after the transition.

It goes without saying that Jenner has been the centre of much of the media attention in 2015 over LGBTQ issues, particularly on the struggles of identifying as a transgender.

But earlier today, Jenner dominated headlines again for different reasons after an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that aired today. She told DeGeneres, who is a lesbian and married to Portia De Rossi, she is still lukewarm to the idea of same-sex marriage.

“I’m a traditionalist,” the 65-year-old said. “I’m older than most people in the audience. I kind of like tradition, and it’s always been a man and a woman. I’m thinking, ‘I don’t quite get it.'”

But she continued, “‘I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness.’ That’s not my job, okay? If that word – ‘marriage’ – is really, really that important to you, I can go with it.”

In a post-show interview with radio host Howard Stern, DeGeneres opened up her thoughts about Jenner’s hypocritical stance.

“I said, ‘You’re wanting people to understand and accept you – this is like, really confusing to people. And you still have a judgement about gay people and marriage,'” DeGeneres told Stern. “She goes, ‘Well if the word marriage is that important.’ It is. That’s the word. We want the same thing.”

Jenner’s Vancouver appearance next year will be held at the Orpheum Theatre as part of the Unique Lives touring speaker series.
