UPDATE 10/14/15: Argan Bistro has closed down.

We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re indulging in an all-organic late-morning feast at Argan Bistro.

Serving up scrumptious, and locally-sourced lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, the recent West End addition Argan Bistro is the perfect place for foodies who want to feast upon fresh, West Coast inspired offerings.

Open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Argan Bistro serves up a range of enticing and beautifully presented plates, from benny-less Eggs Benedict to Chocolate Buckwheat Pancakes. Dishes are “rustic” with “comforting flavours,” declares restaurant owner Kevin Lin.

Relying on seasonal and organic produce, Argan Bistro promises diners the best of season with a continuously evolving menu. Chef Jeff Miller, who shares Lin’s enthusiasm for fresh, local, organic ingredients, integrates local flavours and textural twists into his dishes.

Accommodating gluten-free diets, Argan Bistro has broken away from the traditional Eggs Benny, and replaced it with a Heirloom Tomato Benny-less Benny ($15). Rather than serving perfectly poached free-range eggs on English Muffins, Miller has created a sweet corn polenta base, which he tops with a pumpkin seed pesto, organic greens, fresh local tomatoes, Gruyere cheese, and a creamy Hollandaise sauce.

While satisfying on its own the benny-less benny is accompanied by a neatly presented configuration of fingerling potatoes, or as Miller describes them, “totem tots” – the striking presentation of which highlights Miller’s attention to detail.

Also featured on the menu is the Hickory Smoked Bison on Bannock Bread ($18). Packed with flavour this towering open sandwich of sorts is comprised of grass-fed bison short ribs, charred peppers, caramelized onions, arugula, herb cream cheese, sous-vide egg, Hollandiase, and homemade cast-iron fried Bannock Bread.

Yes, there are lots of components that make up this hearty dish (with flavours reminiscent of those you would taste in a rustic stew), but they work extremely well together. The generous chucks of deliciously tender bison, which have been braised in-house in a herb, wine, rosemary and maple syrup reduction, are complemented by the sweetness of the caramelized onions and the starchiness of the Bannock Bread, which is delightfully doughy and great at mopping up all the wonderful juices.

Catering to those with a sweet tooth, Argan Bistro offers incredibly decadent Chocolate Buckwheat Pancakes ($15), which come impressively stacked on a plate, with caramelized bananas, maple-candied walnuts, and a liquified coconut-lime meringue.
