Arvind Gupta has resigned as the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia following a short 13-month stint.

The university made the announcement today that Gupta has decided to step down from the position in favour of continuing the pursuit of his academic career and roles in the business and research community.

Gupta began his position in July 2014, succeeding Stephen Toope who served the position for eight years. Beginning September 1, 2015 until June 30, 2016, Martha Piper will fill in the position as the Interim President.

Piper was previously the president of UBC from 1997 to 2006.

Prior to being appointed in the leadership position, Gupta was the CEO and Scientific Director of Mitacs, a locally based non-profit organization that manages and funds research and training programs at academic institutions across the country, in cooperation with the federal and provincial governments.

Gupta will be on academic leave to focus on his research and scholarly work. He is expected to return to UBC’s Department of Computer Science when his academic leave concludes.

“I want to take this time to thank Dr. Gupta for his service to the university community over the past year and acknowledge his hard work, integrity, and dedication,” said UBC Board of Governors’ Chair John Montalbano in a statement.

A number of UBC vice-presidents have left their positions during Gupta’s tenure as the President of the university. This includes Pierre Ouillet (Vice-President of Finance), Pascal Spothelfer (Vice-President of Communications and Community Partnerships) and David Farrar (Vice-President Academic, who became the “Advisor to the President”).
