UPDATE: Surrey RCMP have confirmed two fires set in Surrey early Wednesday morning are related and were deliberately set.

Surrey RCMP were called to a suspicious house fire Tuesday night, and the details of the crime are slightly unusual.

Shortly after 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, Surrey RCMP were notified of a blaze near 134th Street and 79th Avenue. According to police, they arrived to find a burnt SUV and a singed garage, along with a jerry can and some clothing.

A quick investigation into the incident led police to believe an arsonist was attempting to set a house on fire when he accidentally set himself on fire. He then tried to drive away in the SUV, which also subsequently caught fire, and crashed into a fence about a block away.

Police say the suspect is still at large.
