What other sporting event features armoured cyclists hurtling down dirt tracks and ripping around turns, before soaring through the air, all while racing against the clock? Here’s a hint: just this one.
Red Bull Joyride 2015 marks the fifth anniversary of the adrenaline pumping spectacle, taking place at Crankworx Whistler. Combining slopestyle, dirt jump and North Shore-style mountain biking, the Red Bull Joyride course features a mixture of Whistler’s natural terrain with man-made features, creating one of the most challenging courses around.
Joyride features some of the best and brightest slopestyle cyclists in the world. Here’s a peek at a few of the athletes.
Born: February 2, 1991 – Whistler, Canada
Hometown boy Brandon Semenuk learned to ride in Whistler, leading to a life long love of the sport, and one of his greatest passions. Semenuk has been professionally competing since he was six years old, and starred in a Red Bull YouTube webseries called “Life Behind Bars,” which chronicles his journey through the world of professional mountain biking.
Born: August 18, 1993 – Southern Belgium
Thomas Genon shocked the mountain-biking world – and himself – when he rose from relative obscurity to take home the top spot in 2012 Red Bull Joyride. Growing up in Southern Belgium, Genon had been called the “unknown teenager” when he first began competing, but his recent performance has ensured he won’t be unknown any longer.
Born: March 4, 1990 – Sweden
Söderström first made his name known in 2007, when he won the Åre Slopestyle competition in Sweden. With a win under his belt and a viral video on YouTube, it was only a matter of time before he started taking home victories around the world. After suffering a broken fibula and tibia at Red Bull Joyride 2013, Söderström made his come back in 2014, and is ready to take the podium again.
When: Saturday, August 15; 4:30 to 8 p.m.
