The Evo Summer Cinema outdoor movies in Stanley Park concluded for the summer Tuesday night with the movie Tomorrowland – and an elaborate marriage proposal.
Gavin Dosanjh, a longshoreman with the Port of Vancouver, proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Sukhi Jassar, a Nurse Practitioner student, before thousands of moviegoers.
Thankfully her answer was a resounding “yes” and was met with cheers from the crowd.
“We had our first date [at the Fresh Air Cinema] two years ago,” Dosanjh told Vancity Buzz.
“I realized then that she’s going to be a special person in my life, so it just seemed fitting to go back to that spot where it all happened.”
Dosanjh made sure to have a professional photographer on site to capture the special night.
Jassar said she was floored by the elaborateness of the proposal given that she and Dosanjh live together, so keeping it a secret would have been difficult.
“I was surprised. I didn’t know how [he] could possibly have the time to go get a ring because I see him all the time. So I had no idea.”
Dosanjh pulled it off, though (with “a lot of sneaking around”), and it culminated in a proposal right on the big inflatable screen in Ceperley Meadows. The words “our friend Gavin has a question” popped up for all to read and then “Sukhi, will you marry me?”
“I kept looking back at the screen and said ‘what does that say? Is this about me?'” said Jassar.
“I had everything on a cheat sheet and I was so stressed out and worried I’d forget my lines, but it all came together,” Dosanjh said.
“He did very well. He was very articulate,” Jassar chimed in.
They capped off their magical night with a stay at the Fairmont Pacific Rim and drinks with friends to celebrate.
