Prime Minister Stephen Harper is being mocked online after releasing an ad against the possible Netflix Tax he claims the Liberals or NDP might impose.

The controversial tax first made headlines this spring when the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) voted against creating a tax for online streaming services in order to support the creation of Canadian content, despite heavy lobbying from groups such as CBC.

In his new ad, Harper states “something you might not know about me is that I love movies and TV shows.” He then goes on to claim his all time favourite show is AMC’s Breaking Bad.

“Some have even called on us to introduce a Netflix tax. Now, Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair have left the door wide open to doing just that. I am 100 per cent against a Netflix tax. Always have been, always will be.”

In the midst of a campaign heavily focused on the economy and social services, Harper’s Netflix ad appears to come out of left field, inciting many to take the opportunity to poke fun at his attempt to connect with young people.

Thus the #HarperANetflixShow was born.

Twitter users dug deep into their arsenal of Harper and Conservative Party puns to remix the titles of some popular TV shows and movies, turning their plots into something perhaps out of a federal cabinet meeting.

“Orange is the New Government”, “Unconstitutional Law and Order” and “House of Cons” are just a few of the funny tweets sent out by thousands Wednesday night after Harper’s ad was launched.
