Vancouver bartender Kevin Brownlee has been named the champion of Grey Goose vodka’s 2015 Canadian Pour Masters competition.

Brownlee, who runs the bar program at AnnaLena in Kitsilano, beat out three other regional finalists from Calgary, Montreal, and Toronto to take the national title. Those four finalists had been challenged to create a cocktail using Grey Goose vodka and making use of up to five ingredients sourced from the Cognac region of France, where the exciting showdown took place on July 30.

For his winning drink, which he named La Marionette de Mary, Brownlee was “[i]nspired by his grandmother and the art of letter writing,” and dazzled the judges “with an extraordinary presentation and his expertly crafted homemade vermouth comprised of local ingredients that he foraged from the grounds of [competition site] Le Logis,” according to Grey Goose.

To earn the Vancouver champ title, Brownlee had showcased his innovative skills by creating his own pop rocks to rim the glass of his cocktail creation, called Due South. His winning regional drink included Grey Goose L’Orange, Fino sherry, rhubarb syrup, lemon, and a rosemary sprig.
