UPDATE at 7 p.m. – The fire is now contained. Fire crews are working to extinguish any remaining hot spots.

EARLIER:

West Vancouver Fire and Rescue tweeted at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11 that they are battling a brushfire on Cypress Mountain.

The fire was initially reported as being 100 feet by 50 feet but has since grown to 200 feet by 80 feet, Assistant Chief Jeff Bush told Vancity Buzz.

“The fire is spreading rapidly. We’ve got a pretty strong wind up here under the power lines,” he said.

Bush and 14 crew members were on their way up to the fire along with three fire engines to battle the blaze.

“It’s quite stubborn right now. It’s in very difficult terrain for our crew to access, and we’re hiking to get to it right now as we speak.”

There are no air crews helping to fight the fire right now and close proximity to high tension power lines might present a challenge. The cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.
