Over one million cycling trips have been made on the Burrard Street Bridge this year to date.

According to the City of Vancouver, the automatic digital bike counter installed at the south end of the Burrard Bridge will record its one millionth rider sometime this weekend.

Ridership on two rubber wheels has been up significantly this year, due to optimal weather conditions and improved cycling infrastructure. The City previously indicated June 2015 experienced record numbers.

The weekday average on the Burrard Bridge for June was 6,400 trips, up from 5,500 trips in 2014. But trip numbers on the weekend were significantly higher at 6,600 trips, compared to the 4,200 trips during the same period last year.

And on Canada Day, a staggering 8,200 cycling trips were recorded at Burrard and Cornwall.

Ridership is expected to grow as cycling infrastructure improves. Another round of Burrard Bridge upgrades approved by Vancouver City Council last month includes widened bike lanes on both directions.

“Overall, the City has seen a continued year-over-year increase in the use of its bike lanes as more residents adapt to cycling, in part due to infrastructure built for people of all ages and abilities,” reads a notice by the City.

The Burrard Bridge digital bike counter was installed in January 2015. A bike counter is also located on the False Creek bike lane outside the entrance of Science World.
