Traveling to Florida is about to get easier, thanks to a new direct WestJet service that links Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Orlando International Airport.

WestJet will offer weekly flights to and from Vancouver to Orlando beginning on January 1, 2016.

This will be Vancouver’s only service to Florida and its first-ever service to Orlando, which is home to a number of global tourist destinations such as Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando. This will also provide British Columbians with a new way to get to Caribbean cruises and destinations.

“It is really exciting to see WestJet enhance its seasonal offering in the Vancouver market,” said Craig Richmond, President & CEO of the Vancouver Airport Authority, in a statement. “Families heading to Disney World, vacationers taking cruises out of Port Canaveral and Canadians simply looking for some sun will all appreciate WestJet’s great new service to Orlando.”

A Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 174 seats will be used for the new route. The aircraft will depart YVR every Friday at 11:35 p.m. and arrive in Orlando at 8:00 a.m. the following day. For return flights, the aircraft will depart Orlando every Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and arrive at YVR at 1:03 p.m.

If there is exceedingly high demand for the route, additional flights could be added. Currently, WestJet operates 423 weekly flights to and from YVR.

So far, 2015 has been another banner year for YVR. An Air Canada Rouge service that operates five times a week was introduced between Vancouver and Osaka, Japan. In late-June, China Eastern Airlines commenced a new thrice-weekly route from Vancouver to Kunming, China.

Earlier this month, Air France announced it would extend its Vancouver to Paris service into the winter months to make it a year-round service. And just this week, British Airways made public its plans to use an Airbus A380 superjumbo jet for its Vancouver London Service beginning in May 2016.

In 2014, YVR clocked a record 19.36 million passengers, an increase of 1.39 million passengers over the previous year. Another record breaking year is anticipated for 2015.
