Free outdoor movies in Stanley Park’s Ceperley Meadow are a great Vancouver tradition, and this year’s movie line-up for the Evo Summer Cinema Series is sure to make for some memorable evenings.

The outdoor movie event happens every Tuesday until the end of August in the beautiful setting of Stanley Park beside Second Beach where thousands of people can make a day of it and enjoy the park, beach, seawall, outdoor pool and playgrounds.

Here are some essentials to bring that will help keep you, your family and friends comfortable and safe while spending the day at the Evo Summer Cinema series.

1. Gear up

To make your movie experience as comfy as possible, you’ll want to bring: a collapsible camp chair or cushy blanket, layers of clothing and extra blankets (it can get chilly once the sun goes down), sunscreen, bug spray and water.

2. Safety first

Bring along a flashlight or headlamp – it’ll help you find your way safely back to your car or bike or as you walk out of the park. Carrying a light will help keep you visible for drivers going in and out of the park after dark.

3. Bring the fun

Movies start at dusk but you’re welcome to arrive early to set up, hang out and check out the activities. Evo Car Share has a volleyball net and bean bag toss game set up for anyone to use. Second Beach is right next to Ceperley Meadow so bring along a swimsuit, kite or Frisbee and make a day of it.

4. Costumes recommended

Get in the spirit by busting out your best costumes, like something ’80s for The Breakfast Club that takes you back in time, or your cool aviator sunglasses to look like Maverick, Goose or Iceman when Top Gun plays. Bring out your Gryffindor, or Slytherin, scarves for Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone and poodle skirts for Grease.

Visit the full movie line-up to see what’s playing when.

5. Transportation

There are plenty of ways to get to the Evo Summer Cinema series. If you’re driving in, the closest access is through the English Bay entrance to Stanley Park. The cost of parking is $3.25 per hour or $11 per day.

Every Tuesday night during the event, Evo Car Share has free nearby parking along Lagoon Drive for its Members. All Evo cars fit up to five passengers and have bike racks so you can easily bring a group of friends, all your picnic supplies and outdoor gear like your bike.

If you’re cycling, a bike valet is available on-site. Taking the bus is also easy and TransLink’s #19 bus stops at Stanley Park Drive and Pipeline Road near Lost Lagoon, from there it’s a short walk to the movie site. And, with Evo Summer Cinema being close to the seawall, you can walk or rollerblade in as well.

6. Wallet

Food trucks and on-site concessions all accept interac and credit cards. It’s also a good idea to bring along a bit of cash as well.
