'Sunburn tattoos' a growing trend among youth on social media

This is not what your dermatologist meant when they told you to use sunscreen.

Creative youth are drawing designs with sunscreen on their bodies and then roasting in the sun to burn a temporary design onto their skin. The trend appears to be taking off on social media.

It’s important to note that tanning without sunscreen is still dangerous and can lead to skin cancer later in life. The Skin Cancer Foundation recently issued a statement discussing the growing popularity of the trend and the dangers behind it:

The Skin Cancer Foundation strongly advises the public to avoid sunburns at all costs. A sunburn is not only painful – it’s dangerous, and comes with consequences. Sunburns cause DNA damage to the skin, accelerate skin aging, and increase your lifetime skin cancer risk.  In fact, sustaining five or more sunburns in youth increases lifetime melanoma risk by 80 percent. On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns. “
