More than 100 wildfires are burning throughout B.C., and as temperatures increase, so does the risk.

As of noon today there will be a ban on all campfires, fireworks and all open burning. The ban will be in effect indefinitely.

To help prevent future human-caused fires, the ban covers all B.C. parks and Crown and private lands.

“We’re committed to safeguarding B.C.’s families, natural resources and infrastructure from wildfires,” said Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson, “Given the hot and dry conditions in most of the province, we are implementing this province wide campfire ban to help protect our communities.”

This ban applies to:

  • open fires of any size, including campfires
  • the use of fireworks, sky lanterns and tiki torches
  • burning barrels or burning cages of any size or description
  • the use of binary exploding targets (e.g., for rifle target practice)
  • the use of air curtain burners (forced-air burning systems)

It does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

If you are caught in breach of this ban you can receive a $345 ticket and may be required to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000. If you are convicted in court of not upholding the ban, you can be fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in prison. According to the B.C. wildfire service, if you cause or contribute to a wildfire, you may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
