The Canucks have signed former Bruins defenceman, Matt Bartkowski, to a one-year deal worth $1.75 million.

Bartkowski has 0 goals and 24 points in 131 career NHL regular season games. His only NHL goal was scored in the 2013 playoffs.

The 27-year-old American defenceman has been rumoured to Vancouver for a while now, so this signing shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Canucks GM Jim Benning knows him well from his Boston days.

What should surprise, is the dollar amount given to a player who may not be a top-6 defenceman next season.

At 6’1″ and 196 lbs, Bartkowski has decent size and was a depth defenceman for the Bruins last season. He appeared in just 47 games last year, averaging less than 17 minutes of ice time per game.

Vancouver is now set on defence, with six NHL defencemen under contract, plus restricted free agents Frank Corrado and Adam Clendening also expected to be on the roster.

Bartkowski will compete for ice time with the likes of Luca Sbisa, Yannick Weber, Frank Corrado and Adam Clendening.
