Tom Cruise has reportedly signed on to reprise his role as U.S. fighter pilot Maverick in an upcoming sequel of Top Gun.

According to The Daily Mail, a script for the sequel is currently in development and Cruise will join the cast of the film. This comes 29 years after the original 1986 film, which turned Cruise into a movie star and household name.

However, few details are known about the possible plot about the movie, except that it will focus on drone technology and the new role of fighter pilots today – whether they are obsolete.

For years, there has been much discussion in the film industry about a possible sequel, and this was recently cemented with the successes of Jurassic World and Mad Max: Fury Road and the upcoming return of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator Genisys.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters… It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today,” David Ellison, CEO of Skydance, told reporters in Berlin.

The original movie, now considered an American film classic, was made with a $15 million budget and attained a box office gross of $356.8 million.
