Tim Hortons removes Enbridge ads amidst backlash

Tim Hortons has taken down an advertisement that brought the company heaps of backlash.

For approximately three weeks, the Canadian coffee chain played advertisements for Enbridge on screens in over 1,500 stores from B.C. to Ontario. The ads were played on Tims TV, an in-restaurant TV channel.

Public pressure mounted when customers took to Twitter to express their disapproval with Tim Hortons’ choice to air the ads.

A petition launched on SumOfUs.org, which currently holds almost 30,000 signatures, called on Tim Hortons to take down the ads.

“A public outcry will let Timmies know that it can’t get away with shilling tar sands without us coming together to stop it,” reads the petition description.

Tim Hortons replied to many of the frustrated customers on Twitter by saying, ”We value your feedback and the Enbridge advertisements are no longer airing on Tims TV.”

The ads were scheduled to air for another week. The online petition has claimed victory.

Enbridge is the oil company behind the controversial Northern Gateway Pipeline that would consist of two pipelines stretching 1,177 km between Alberta and the West Coast. The pipeline would transport 525,000 barrels of oil per day.
