A longstanding fixture on the Vancouver restaurant scene, Subeez in Yaletown has apparently called it quits, and the owners face accusations of unpaid rent, bills, and staff.

Rumblings of something being awry at Subeez began a few days ago, when on June 8, CTV’s Lynda Steele posted on Twitter:

Initially the restaurant indicated they were closed because of “mechanical problems,” but their employees were telling a different tale online.

On June 8, Subeez employee Jeremy Kulyk tweeted a link to a posting on his personal Facebook page: “I just found out that our employer has shut down and has not, and apparently is not going to pay us, not to mention our pay checks have started to bounce. If anyone has ANY advice or knows of any lawyers in BC please comment below. We all could use the help!”

In the ensuing comments thread, Kulyk and another employee say the owner has not returned any of their calls or texts. (We spoke with Kulyk on June 15 and learned additional information.)

But the writing is officially on the wall at Subeez, in the form of a Distress Warrant regarding unpaid rent.

Here’s a closer look at the notice:

Subeez opened in July 1994, and has stuck it out for an impressive duration, considering how much has changed in Yaletown in the past 20 years. The restaurant’s website shares a personal perspective from the previous owner, Benny Deis, about its own history, including great memories of the 2010 Olympics, after-hours parties, and visits from stars like the Spice Girls and “Sarah McLaughlin” (sic). Currently the restaurant was preparing to host a musicians showcase on June 28.

Our calls to the Subeez phone were not picked up this morning.

*Ed. note: A previously published version of this story indicated Deis was the owner of Subeez, however Deis clarified the restaurant was sold to Ali Beacharanloo, who is the current proprietor.
