Film crews were spotted at Squamish’s Stawamus Chief Provincial Park earlier this week preparing the area for filming. According to a film notice, there will be four days of filming from July 25 to 26 and July 29 to 30 at Cacodemon Boulder, Cave Boulder and Black Dyke Boulder.

“Washington” is the code name for the production of the third instalment of the new Star Trek film series initiated by J.J. Abrams.

But some locals are frustrated and angry that the production has temporarily closed a popular local trail in the area. They also allege that two trees were cut and some boulders were spray painted.

Paramount Pictures’ activity for the production is expected to add tens of millions of dollars to the local economy.

Much of the movie will be filmed inside Vancouver Film Studios, where the set of the Enterprise has been built. Some filming has already occurred in South Korea.

As Abrams is currently preoccupied with reviving the Star Wars franchise, director Justin Lin has taken over the helm of Star Trek 3.

Lin is best known for directing four films in The Fast and the Furious franchise. Star Trek 3 also stars Simon Pegg (Montgomery “Scotty” Scott), Karl Urban (Leonard “Bones” McCoy), John Cho (Hikaru Sulu), Anton Yelchin (Pavel Chekov), and Idris Elba as the film’s villain. It is scheduled for a July 8, 2016 theatrical release.
