Are you sick to death of “Uptown Funk” and want to delve into a little Gastown funk instead? The fifth annual Make Music Vancouver Festival is back in town this month and it might just be the musical relief you’ve been looking for.

Started in Paris in 1982, Make Music is an international event for amateur musicians and their fans, with more than 100 countries participating worldwide. The festival made its way to Vancouver in 2011 and turned Water Street into a gigantic hipster dance floor, with 20,000 attendees jamming to the sounds of Vancouver’s best undiscovered talent.

You can expect more of the same on Wednesday, June 24 from 5 to 10 p.m. when Make Music takes over Gastown for the night. As always, the festival is entirely free with organizers, volunteers and musicians donating their time and talent.

If you’re a musician, amateur or professional, and you’re looking for some great exposure, head to Make Music Vancouver’s website and sign up to participate in this unique and awesome event. Artists from all genres are encouraged to register, and they can even make space for your backup dancers.

Festival organizers have announced yet another way to participate in Make Music Vancouver. “Inertia” is a musician’s workshop that will teach you how to mix your own songs, produce your own beats and design your own posters. “Inertia” runs on Sunday, June 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. and participants can attend any or all of the sessions for just $10. You can register online here.

It is estimated that 100 bands of all musical genres will play live in the streets.

Check out makemusicvancouver.ca for more information on how to join the global party.
