Residents of Metro Vancouver should brace for a sizzling weekend as record breaking heat is in the forecast.

According to Environment Canada, a massive ridge of high pressure is expected to move warm air from the south into British Columbia. Temperatures in the Vancouver region will reach 29°C by the water and as high as 32°C inland. Residents could also have trouble sleeping with nightly lows of 18°C in the forecast.

Within the Fraser Valley, Squamish and Whistler, highs of 33°C and over are expected. It could be even hotter in the B..C interior, particularly at Kamloops and Kelowna where 40°C could be reached.

The month of May was a record dry month for Metro Vancouver with only 4.2mm of rain falling in 31 days, significantly lower than the average 65 mm. The expected days of heat will make forests and grasslands tinder dry, increasing the fire risk exponentially.

With B.C. bracing for a possible summer water shortage due to low rainfall and non-existent snowpacks in most areas, water restrictions are now in effect across Metro Vancouver. Forecasts call for the warm, dry weather to continue throughout the summer and fall.

Residents could be fined $250 for sprinkling their lawns outside of the permitted hours between 4 to 9 a.m. Households with even-numbered addresses can sprinkle their lawns during these times on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday while odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle their lawns on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
