The much anticipated Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix cycling race will return to the cobble-stone streets of Gastown this July.

Cyclists will speed down Water Street from the intersection of Water and Cambie St. and make a sharp hairpin turn onto West Cordova, then continue along to Carrall St. and back onto Water. Men will ride a total of 50 laps around the course, totaling 60 km and women will make 35 laps, or 42 km.

New for 2015 is a youth race where girls and boys born between 1999 and 2002 can race the course for 20 minutes.

While the Gastown Grand Prix is a top destination for cyclists, with prizes of $12,000 going to the top man and woman, it is also a spectacle for crowds who want to catch a taste of the action.

Where to watch

Event organizers expect thousands of people to line the course, with big crowds usually congregating near the sharp and challenging curves at Water and Cordova and in front of the Hotel Europe at the intersection of Water, Alexander St. and Powell St.

Those with offices looking out over the course also have the benefit of watching the event out their window while enjoying a drink, or two. Our tip? Head up to the top of Impark parkade at 450 West Cordova for a bird’s eye view. Regardless of where you watch, arrive early for the best vantage point.

Streets in the area will also be closed to traffic, so plan your transportation ahead and consider walking, cycling or public transit.
