We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we are in Riley Park to check out the cozy space and fun food at Kitchen on Main St.

Local restaurant pros Uli Schnur and Herschel Miedzygorski have balls. Meatballs, specifically. At their newly-opened Kitchen on Main St. the duo are using the cross-cultural orb as a menu backbone, and as a fun way to express its own diversity, and that of the city itself.

Schnur and Miedzygorski have known each other since the mid-1980s, when they first crossed professional paths at Miedzygorski’s first restaurant, Whistler’s Southside Deli. Though Schnur still calls Whistler home, it’s a homecoming of sorts for Miedzygorski, who lives nearby Kitchen on Main St. in the vibrant, family-friendly Riley Park area.

The meatball shows up in all sorts of iterations, from the more traditional beef or lamb to the wildly inventive, like the Reuben meatball, or the poke (Japanese-style chopped fish), or a meat-free ball of kale and quinoa. At brunch the meatball is served in an Eggs Benedict ($12) topped with poached free-run eggs and Hollandaise on top of foccacia with a side of their signature potato pancake.

Brunchers will also find the meatballs as an option on Kitchen on Main St.’s frittata ($11) or in their white bean and egg skillet ($11). Sweet selections include French Toast ($11) and Belgian Waffles ($11).

Bridging the gap between morning and midday munchies are some stellar savoury choices, including their delectable brunchtime Spaghetti Carbonara ($11), which is a decadent pasta topped with tender, rich pork belly chunks and a golden sunny-side-up fried egg. It’s a hearty and satisfying way to fuel up for a weekend of adventuring, errand-running, or even heading back under the covers for a well-deserved nap.

Diners may want to take full advantage of warm weather days and enjoy their brunch (and meatballs) on the charming Kitchen on Main St. back patio, which is a real hidden gem.
