A fun and refreshing way to kick off the weekend is Gin and Tonic Fridays at Long Table Distillery.

Located on Hornby Street in downtown Vancouver, Long Table Distillery is an operational micro distillery that produces handcrafted small-batch, premium quality spirits. On Friday evenings, they open their doors to the public from 4 p.m. onwards to sample some of their locally-made gin.

The menu is pretty straightforward. First you choose your gin (there’s a choice between the distillery’s London Dry or their award wining Cucumber Gin), then you choose whether you want a single or a double shot, and then finally you choose what tonic you’d prefer your gin to be mixed with – generic, homemade or premium.

If you’re having trouble deciding you can always opt for a tasting flight of the gins offered. Or, alternatively, you can take the advice from the extremely personable staff, whose suggestions will suit the particular taste you’re after. For me, those were the London dry with their homemade tonic, and Long Table’s Cucumber Gin with British-made Fever Tree tonic.

While both drinks are incredibly refreshing and easy to drink, the Cucumber Gin has subtle citrus notes, whereas the London dry is more classic in taste and has an incredibly smooth consistency.

Whether you take your gin seriously or are new to the gin scene, Long Table’s Gin and Tonic Fridays are an excellent way to sample a variety of gins as well as interact with the distillers, who are passionate about their products and happy to give customers the low-down on what’s what, in regards to their spirits, the distillation process, perfect pairings and more.

Long Table’s G&Ts are served until 9 p.m., with a local food truck parked out front selling meals and snacks to go with the distillery’s wonderful libations. Patrons are encouraged to bring their food truck fare into the gorgeous tasting room, to enjoy along side their drinks.

With a decidedly modern yet rustic feel, Long Table’s tasting room is bright, clean and has bench style seating, which makes for an enjoyable communal experience. There’s also a beautiful bar in addition to a wall of interesting and useful cocktail-related merchandise like giant round ice molds, a selection of tonics including Fever Tree and Long Table’s own homemade tonic (a concoction of filtered Coast Mountain Water, cane sugar, cinchona bark, citric acid, citrus zest, lemon grass and spices), and several other bits and bobs for all your gin and tonic needs.
