Vancouver's traffic expected to stay busy over summer months

The man in charge of keeping traffic flowing in Vancouver says drivers frustrated by construction delays and street closures won’t get any relief over the next few months.

“Leave a little extra time. This summer is going to be busy. There’s a whole series of special events.”

Jerry Dobrovolny, the city’s transportation director, says it’s the price you pay for living or working in a ‘vibrant’ and ‘successful’ city.

“Our city construction – water, sewer and streets and also the telecommunications companies and other utilities, such as gas… all of that is competing for space.”

“But, certainly, it has an impact on people’s ability to get around. We’ve got record levels of development right now. You see that we need to re-allocate a lane or two next to the building site for concrete pours, for crane lifts through the summer. Leave some extra time and do a little bit of research each time, so you can make good decisions.”

He adds if you need help planning your commute, just check the city’s website.
