We’re taking a tasty tour of Vancouver’s many brunches to create The Ultimate Vancouver Brunch Guide. This week we’re at Jules Casual French Bistro in Vancouver’s historic Gastown.

With authentic, hearty French bistro fare, a charming ambience and a relaxed feel, Jules Casual French Bistro is the perfect spot for a weekend brunch rendezvous.

In true unhurried European style, Jules Bistro opens its doors for brunch at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The late-morning start means the menu focuses on both French inspired brunch and lunchtime offerings, as opposed to centering strictly on classic American breakfast favs.

The talented chefs who work away in the restaurant’s partially open kitchen dish up each weekend a brunch spread that includes: tea, coffee, orange juice, croissants, baguettes with butter and preserves, eggs, green salads, soup, as well as a selection of desserts (the desserts all of which are priced at $8.50).

Of course there are a range of heartier options too like the breakfast cassoulet ($16), which is comprised of white coco beans, bacon, chorizo, duck confit and is topped with a poached egg. This robust dish is surprisingly light (it’s filling but not so heavy that it will weigh you down for the rest of the day) and full of exquisite flavours.

There’s also a country-style dish of scrambled eggs, bacon asparagus, sautéed fingerling potatoes and tomato provencal ($13); moules frites steamed in white wine, garlic and parsley ($21); a quiche of the day ($14); ribeye steak served with salad or fries and topped with herb butter ($26); Croque-Monsieur ($12.50), and more.

While the restaurant’s main brunch plates are absolutely enough to satisfy any nagging brunch hunger, it is imperative to leave room for at least one sweet treat, especially as Jules Bistro’s entire dessert menu is available at brunch.

Featuring a sizable list of decadent delights (all made on premise) such as: crème caramel; vanilla crème brûleé, melting chocolate cake with caramel sauce; oranges topped with orange blossom sorbet and mint caramel, the chefs at Jules Bistro have made it incredibly difficult to order just one, as everything sounds so good.

Aside from the food, the restaurant’s delightful ambience draws new and returning visitors. Embracing a decidedly vintage French look and feel, the team behind Jules Bistro has created a truly gorgeous dining space for patrons to enjoy their meals in.

With an exposed brick wall, black and white tiled flooring, dark wooden furniture, a large hanging crystal chandelier, framed mirrors and French signage, Jules Bistro meets the quintessential French interior standards easily. So much so it’s easy to forget that the restaurant is in fact nestled among a line of bars on Abbott Street and not on some cobbled side street in Paris.
