ECO Fashion Week

After taking a hiatus from the runway last season, Eco Fashion Week returned to its green runway glory. Featuring 16 shows and an installation style reception, there were plenty of fashion-forward looks to draw inspiration from.

True to this statement on EFW’s website, “if you’re looking for granola and hemp, you’ll have to check the snack bar.”

Eco Fashion Week - Dominique Hanke

1. Dominique Hanke

Milliner and stylist Dominique Hanke took part in the Value Village Thrift Chic Challenge, where stylists are challenged to create a cohesive collection sourced from the sponsor’s second hand stores. From her Mean Girls inspired collection, “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink,” the ribbon-laced mid-calf Converse shoes kicks it up a notch when paired with a hot pink sporty chic cape dress. Oh, and that hair!

2. Carlie Wong

Former Project Runway Canada contestant, and a design superstar in her own right, Carlie Wong took to the runway with an all-black evening wear collection by repurposing thrifted pieces at Value Village. This look is pure perfection, balancing a cute peekaboo lace top with the season’s hottest midi-length hemline.

3. Born Again Vintage

Bridgett Artise is a New York-based vintage expert who upcycles fabrics for her designs, pretty much living and breathing Eco Fashion Week’s 68lb Challenge to make clothing by repurposing old clothing. This kimono-esque dress is flirty, playful, and sexy.

4. Fesvedy

If it’s not obvious enough, this look is all about geometry! Can’t you see it in the model’s face?! This statement coat from Fesvedy is one of the best outerwear pieces seen at Eco Fashion Week.

5. Wallis Evera

Who says hemp has to look like hemp? This modern two-tone shift dress is so subtly sophisticated. If you’re looking to shop the runway for a wearable, sustainable, and chic pieces, definitely check out the new Wallis Evera brand.

6. Evan Ducharme

Even if you’re not a fan of extremes, you can’t help but look at Evan Ducharme’s work with wonderment. This time he challenges our expectations in fashion with a raw, edgy and barely-there leotard (?!) and trench. If we’re big into the ’90s right now, he might as well be the one to pave the way for a neo-nineties trend: Matrix chic.

7. Raji Aujla

You probably would never guess, but this look is designed by a law student. Okanagan Valley-based Raji Aujla draws from her documentary-making pursuits in India to tell a story of truth. The only truth here? The oversized hoodies and skinny camo pants are a fabulous combo.

8. Turnabout Clothing

Vancouver luxury reseller Turnabout Clothing sent this perfectly coordinated stone-coloured suit down the runway. The modern man’s definition of masculinity is changing, so cheers to breaking away from the black on black suit.

9. Murva

Croatia’s Murva made its international debut at Eco Fashion Week. Designer Ivana Knezović works with wool flannel in the most eco-friendly colour: white. No dyes equals no additional chemicals used. This garment is one of the most interesting looks – from the front you can’t tell there’s a cocoon shaped structure in the back.

10. Jason Matlo

Veteran Vancouver designer Jason Matlo celebrated his 10th year in business during the last Eco Fashion Week. This season, he closed the shows with this elegant black and gold combo. And of course, there’s got to be a bow.
