The ‘true north strong and free’ is one of the happiest countries in the world according to the United Nation’s World Happiness Report.

Canada ranked as number five in the list of 158 countries, only slightly behind European nations Switzerland, Iceland, Denmark and Norway. The measurement of happiness is based on GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.

The United Nations considers happiness to be a measure of social progress and a goal of public policy. Their average life evaluations range from zero to 10, where zero represents the worst possible life and 10 the best possible. Canada and the other top-ranking nations all score around 7.5 while the the bottom nations fall below three.

In terms of age and gender, women reported slightly higher happiness levels, as did the younger populations.

Canada’s neighbours to the south, Mexico and the United States were ranked at number 14 and 15 respectively. The United Kingdom was named number 21, Taiwan number 38, Japan at 46, South Korea number 47, Hong Kong number 72 and China at 84.
