Locals know. They know where to get the best deals, where to find the most fun, where to take the kids in the unlikely event of a rainstorm. And they know the shortest route to each of those favourite finds.
Kelowna locals are no exception—although they are known for having a bit of a better nose for fun. Here are a few of the best things Kelowna locals know.
Best place for a picnic
A picnic with a view, Knox Mountain Park is located overlooking downtown Kelowna and offers a stunning vista that includes the Kelowna waterfront and Okanagan Lake. The breeze is a refreshing escape from the valley heat and there are ample picnic tables and grassy spaces to spread your meal. Drive to the summit or park lower down and work up an appetite.
Best place to hang with the bees
If it has to do with honey, Arlo’s Honey Farm has it. Buzz through Pollinator Park, hover at the Honey Tasting Bar and gather some goodies at the Gift Gallery as you come to better know nature’s flying miracle. Arlo’s opens May 14.
Best place to play when it’s pouring outside
Be a kid again at the Energyplex—Kelowna’s family fun place. Featuring a four-storey playground, trampolines, a rock wall and laser-tag arena—among other cool features—the Energyplex is great fun for kids of all ages.
Best place to pretend you’re a train
On foot or on the back of your bike, imagine chugging across 18 trestle bridges and through two tunnels. That’s the magic of Myra Canyon, an incredibly scenic portion of the Kettle Valley Railway just west of Kelowna. With a trail grade of just two percent, the trail is an easy stroll and wheelchair accessible. Sounds like it’s time to get outside!
Best place to get prawns on Thursday night
Every pub seems to have a favourite finger food to draw in the crowds on a quiet night. Wings are big, dry ribs are too. But the heavyweights in this prizefight are the fan-tailed prawns offered at Mickie’s Pub. Breaded and deep-fried, the prawns are served piping hot every Thursday evening for just 39 cents a piece. There’s a minimum order of 10, but for less than four bucks a plate, how can you go wrong?
Best place to catch live music on or offline
If you can get there, The Streaming Café offers the finest in live independent music. The downtown Kelowna café describes itself as the merging of a “love of good coffee with the love of arts, music and community.” If you can’t get there, you can still catch the live music online—streamed for your entertainment, sans the great coffee. That you’ll have to make yourself.
