For the sixth year in a row, the world’s largest air transport surveying agency has ranked Vancouver International Airport as North America’s best airport.

According to the Vancouver Airport Authority, this is the first time in Skytrax’s Passenger Choice Awards history than an airport has held onto a top ranking for six consecutive years. The ranking is based on a customer satisfaction survey on 550 airports with submissions by over 13 million passengers around the world.

The survey asks passengers to evaluate airports on 39 factors of airport experience such as check-in, border clearance efficiency, signage , transportation availability, design, layout, shopping, service and dining options. Winners of this year’s awards were announced today at Paris, France.

“This recognition for a sixth year-in-a-row is a testament to all the people who contribute to our shared success,” said Craig Richmond, President and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“I want to acknowledge and thank our community, passengers, partners and the 24,000 people who work and volunteer at YVR. We are both proud and humbled and will continue to collectively care for all our customers while connecting B.C. to the world.”

Along with claiming the continent’s best title, Vancouver International Airport also won awards for the best airport in the world for the 10 to 20 million passenger category and the third best in North America for best airport staff.

In addition, the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel, located on the east end of the international/transborder terminal building was named the best airport hotel in North America and the sixth best in the world.

Aside from award titles, 2014 was a banner year for Vancouver International Airport in terms of passenger traffic growth. The airport reached a historic record of over 19.358-million passengers, which represents a one-year increase of more than 1.386-million passengers.

Growth in passenger traffic is expected to continue into 2015, potentially breaking the 20 million mark, with the air transport industry on the rebound, tourism growth from key markets such as China and India, the introduction of new airline routes, and major conventions and events such as this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
