The Royal Architecture Institute of Canada’s (RAIC) branch in Metro Vancouver is joining the Better Transit and Transportation Coalition and providing advocacy through a series of illustrations that show the consequences of a ‘No’ vote in the transit plebiscite.

As part of the RAIC’s campaign, the organization is asking local architects and urban designers to leverage their skills to create provocative artistic visions of the implications of the important decision.

Architecture and the design of our built environment greatly impacts the overall quality of life of our society.

The organization strongly believes that a ‘Yes’ vote will lead to a sustainable future while the ‘No’ vote alternative will lead to a bleak outlook where social equity, health, well-being, quality of life, environment and affordability are affected in a detrimental way.

“With one million new residents moving to the region by 2041, we must act now to protect our quality of life,” said Sean Ruthen, RAIC Metro Vancouver Chapter Chair. “The RAIC Metro Vancouver Chapter urges Metro Vancouver residents to support the Yes vote and to actively preserve the benefits of a safe and healthy environment for our region.”

The best illustrations will be recognized in two awards: one winner selected by the RAIC and another winner selected by popular vote through ‘Likes.’ Here are the social media methods for submission:

RAIC-selected entries will be announced at the end of the day of Sunday, March 29 and both winners will be recognized online and at the upcoming Advocacy in Architecture Awards.
