Modern Agriculture, the publication that is the mecca of all things agriculture, is giving away a cooking class for two at Lepp Farm Market and two Modern Agriculture shirts to one lucky winner!
We had the opportunity to interview Harwind Bassi, co-founder of Modern Agriculture, to give us more insight on Modern Agriculture.
1. What encouraged you to found Modern Agriculture?
My business partner, Gurtaj Sandhu was in Den Bosch, Netherlands for a Study Abroad opportunity in relation to his Agriculture program at UFV for about six months. He was inspired by the technology/innovation that was happening there and how accessible information was to farmers in regards to that technology. Being a local farmer himself, he realized there wasn’t anything in B.C. that relayed useful information to local farmers.
With that we saw an opportunity to bring some idea/insight to the local B.C. agriculture community. There were other publications/newspapers out here but there was a gap in providing information in a timely manner and relevant information for all of agriculture. There are great publications targeted to certain commodities of agriculture, but nothing that would bring everyone together and nothing that targeted the B.C. agriculture community as a whole. That is when we decided to form a team of young farmers who are active in the industry and build this publication.
2. Who do you think can find the most benefit from reading Modern Agriculture?
Modern Agriculture would benefit commercial farmers of all types and agriculture enthusiasts such as home gardeners/hobby farmers as well. Our topics are mainly focused on the commodities that are farmed within the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. We also cover topics on Global Agriculture and cover topics on how they are using different technologies for farmers to increase there efficiencies locally and improve there output. These topics have also been great in educating farmers on other issues affecting the agriculture community globally.
Our website is an excellent source for Home Gardeners, who are looking for tips/tricks to growing their own fruits/vegetables as well as to broaden there knowledge on the various agriculture sectors we have here in B.C. Each agriculture sector is unique and there is a lot one can learn about each of those industries by viewing the articles that are written by our expert industry contributors.
3. What were you hoping for your audience to gain when they read Modern Agriculture?
Our main goal is to keep farmers informed with current events regarding agriculture but focusing on technology and innovation, events and industry updates. More importantly we want to farmers to take something away from each issue we release or article we post online and be able to apply it into there farming practices or at the very least learn something new about there respective industries. Each issue we are striving to bring out the latest information while building agriculture awareness to the public and highlighting the B.C. agriculture industry.
4. Any ideas of expanding your magazine services to be sent out more frequently?
We have been very fortunate to receive support from all the various agriculture industries. With there support and the support of our readers we have been able to grow a lot quicker than anticipated. We have been focused on improving our product constantly and want to grow gradually to raise our standards each step of the way. Currently we are a quarterly magazine but we do have hopes of becoming bi-monthly publication. Our first step is to use our website as an alternative to providing more information in a timely manner while we transition to becoming a bi-monthly publication.
5. Can you give our readers a sneak peak on what they can expect from Modern Agriculture?
From Modern Agriculture, you can expect us to putting out more and higher quality content as we move forward. We will also be putting in more efforts into expanding out online presence in the hopes to be your number one source for agriculture related news in B.C.
