There’s an overwhelming amount of apps out there (approximately 1.3 million for Android users and 1.2 million in Apple’s app store with around 75 billion downloads and 300 million views a week). But how do you know which ones to download? Which ones are worth paying for? How to differentiate between Google and Apple maps? Airbnb or Hotel Tonight? Tinder or Bumble? We’re in search of answering these questions and each week we’ll be bringing you our weekly app pick.

Hyve

Not sure what to do tonight? Two young entrepreneurs in Vancouver have you covered. Co-founded by Andrew Lackie and James Isaacs, Hyve is the social app connecting Vancouverites to their favourite local bars and nightclubs. Modeled and named after the social beehive community, Hyve sends its users to the hottest events around town – all with a few simple taps on your screen.

Using GPS, Hyve instantly populates all the events happening closest to you. The app also offers a curated experience, allowing users to follow friends and create a more personal community. “We wanted to incorporate the best social platforms out there and utilize them to create a unique events guide with Hyve,” explains Lackie.

Similar to Facebook, users can post photos, check-in to their location, and use popular like and comment features. So, what sets Hyve apart from Facebook? “Facebook does a great job putting together events [for bars and nightclubs], but only a handful of people actually attend. What we’re doing is bridging the gap for social by being the connection between the events and users,” says Lackie.

And they’re just getting started. The app recently launched new features, including their Instagram-inspired photo wall. The photo wall takes every Hyve users posted photos for a location and builds a collage throughout the day. “The photo wall creates a social community by showing users how the night is progressing and what’s busy versus what’s not,” says Lackie. And the best part? The following morning the photo wall gets wiped clean, allowing lasts nights evidence to fade into somewhat blurry memories.

Hyve is also a great marketing tool for nighttime establishments. “By subscribing to the app, bars and nightclubs can access their social media, events, ticket sales, pictures, etc., all in one convenient place,” says Lackie. “There’s a lot of potential with great companies hosting great events but users are missing out because there isnt a connection between the bars and the customers.” And that’s not all. “We want to look into using Hyve’s marketing tools to support local artist and smaller venues in ways that are more efficient.”

Why you should download it

Hyve is a window into Vancouver’s nightlife for both local and new-to-Vancouver users while creating a social marketing experience for businesses. “People are going to be looking for the best happy hour deals or the best patios in the city. And we’re trying to make sure Hyve provides exactly what they’re looking for.” So, there you have it. Hyve is a great way to keep connected in Vancouver for the day’s best deals and upcoming events.
