The City of Vancouver has announced they will once again allow select restaurants to offer extended patio hours this year.

Following a successful pilot program that ran the full length of the 2014 patio season, the city says they will now welcome restaurants to apply to keep their outdoor spaces open until 1 a.m. from April to October.

The 1 a.m. closing time represents a two-hour extension from the 11 p.m. curfew imposed on restaurant patios back in 2013. In 2014, 115 establishments in Vancouver were able to keep their patios open until midnight.

Currently, the city says there are 298 active large patios and 301 active small patios eligible to apply. Applicant venues must have up-to-date insurance, all fees paid in full and no patio noise related complaints on file in the last 12 months in order to qualify.

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson is a vocal supporter of extended patio hours.

“As locals know, and visitors fast come to appreciate, Vancouver summers are amazing. I’m pleased we can work together with our hospitality businesses to provide a fun, vibrant experience to patrons even later this year, ” Robertson said in a statement. “[Extended patio hours] will help us ensure we are creating lively streetscapes that contribute to our economy while considering impacts to surrounding neighbours.”
