DVD and Blu-ray rental company Redbox has announced they will be shutting down their Canadian operations and pulling all rental kiosks in the country. The Chicago-based company first entered the Canadian market in 2012, bringing low cost options to consumers. However, the quickly changing industry with the likes of Netflix and Video on Demand was too much for the rental company to handle.

In a statement on its website, Redbox said:

“We were excited to bring our service here, but unfortunately, demand just didn’t meet our expectations. We will be focusing our attention on our U.S. business, where demand for physical media remains strong. Redbox Canada kiosks will be turned off on March 5. They may remain in stores for a couple of weeks after that, but they won’t be renting out or accepting discs.”

The last day for kiosk rentals will be Friday, February 13, while the last return date is March 5. The company will pull all 1,400 of its kiosks across the country, including over 80 throughout Metro Vancouver.
