Rogers Sportsnet has the NHL broadcast rights for Canada for the next 12 years, and based on some decisions recently, it may be a long 12 years for hockey fans.

This includes today’s news of the Hockey Night in Canada ‘Music Montage Maker’ Tim Thompson being let go.

Thompson’s montages during the Stanley Cup playoffs were always a must-watch. They perfectly captured the emotion and battle of the NHL playoffs and become unforgettable. I could post 20 videos and it wouldn’t do it justice.

The montage that will always remain in my memory was before Game 1 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final:

As well as the montage before Game 5:

Looking back at the videos now, it only solidifies how great of a job that Thompson did.

Although Rogers has brought some nice changes to Hockey Night in Canada, like the skycam and fewer regional restrictions, this decision is mind boggling.

But don’t worry, Rogers has 11.5 years left to get it right.
