Local YouTubers LIFE OF BRI have created this awesome Chinese New Year rap video parody of The Weeknd’s “Often” called Red Pockets, featuring Scope G. If you’re Chinese, or have Chinese family and friends, then you can relate to that sweet feeling of just raking in all that lucky money during Chinese New Year!
We got a chance to chat with Brian Cheung from LIFE OF BRI about the video:
What made you create the video?
We created this music video to show how Chinese people feel when they hook up lucky money when Chinese New Year rolls around. We decided to create something that everyone could enjoy and have a great laugh about, so what better than a rap video where red envelopes free fall from the sky?
How long did it make to put it together?
This video took about a month to create from the initial writing, recording, filming, to the final edit. I approached Jeremy Lim with the idea of creating a parody of The Weeknd’s “Often,” but soon in the studio we had rewritten it as a hard hitting rap song complete with visual punchlines. We shot the video at different locations around Metro Vancouver, including Aberdeen, Yaohan, President Plaza, Tinseltown, Rain Ultraclub and SFU.
What do you have in store for the future?
We are currently working on a parody of Canada’s Worst Driver called Richmond’s Worst Driver. We are also in the final stages of the pilot episode for Ultra Cheap Asian Boys. Between our bigger projects, we are making comedic YouTube skits with an Asian Canadian spin.
What’s the response been like to this video?
Our video was launched Sunday evening and it immediately premiered on Fairchild TV just before the 7 p.m. news report. So far the reception has been great as all our uncles and aunties love it.
We also spoke with the track’s producer, Jeremy Lim about working on the video.
“Working with LIFE OF BRI was so much fun,” Lim said. “The team includes some of the wittiest and most driven people I know. They put in a lot long hours and brought in so many people to make this project happen, and I’m really glad I got to be part of it.”
“The track was easy. Brian pitched the idea for a parody of “Often” by The Weeknd, but more Chinese and hyped up. I put a demo together, and the team liked it, so we brought on Scope G for some extra edge to the track and hashed out the song in a couple of studio sessions.”
“It’s amazing how much the song evolved in that short period. We all came in with concepts, but we opted to shift directions during our first sit down. That same night, Brian and Scope G rewrote the entire thing on the fly. These guys have fast minds and such a great sense of humour. It was really inspiring watching these two go.”
