aberdeen centre chinese new year countdown

The start of the New Year in the Chinese/Lunar calendar is just hours away, and if you are looking to celebrate the Year of the Goat tonight in Metro Vancouver you are in luck.

Aberdeen Centre in Richmond is hosting a midnight countdown at its central atrium, featuring cultural performances, singing, dancing, fortune telling and a live Chinese televised countdown on cable channel Fairchild Television. It is the largest midnight countdown event in the Metro Vancouver region.

Across much of Asia, the Lunar New Year (Spring Festival) is celebrated with great fervor and is celebrated over a period of 15 days. It can be likened to what Christmas and Gregorian New Year’s is to the West with more than three billion people in China and Southeast Asia traveling home to celebrate the holiday. Essentially, this is the world’s largest annual migration.

Tonight’s event is free, begins at 9 p.m. and ends at 12:30 a.m. Please note that the Aberdeen Centre event is mainly programmed for Vancouver’s Chinese language community.
