A Vancouver Island man involved in a solo car crash last month managed to take a “selfie” video of himself during the rescue, which involved the use of the Jaws of Life to extricate him from the wreckage.

“I got into a car accident. Shortly after the fire crew arrived I was video taping myself getting cut out of the car. Jaws of life right behind my head,” says Andrew MacDonald of his escapade on his YouTube post.

MacDonald uploaded the video on February 22, but the accident took place January 11 in Duncan, when he says he “blacked out behind the wheel” at around 5:30 a.m. after a night out in Victoria.

He managed to ram his 1993 Honda Accord into a pole on the driver’s side. “Why couldn’t I have hit it on the passenger side?” he joked during the rescue.

The video shows about two and half minutes of the rescue, during which time MacDonald manages to smile and laugh quite a bit, though he does let the responders know he’s starting to feel some pain in his legs.

MacDonald wrote on YouTube about his injuries and treatment:

“Suffered a broken right arm. Broken left Femur. Broke both knee caps. And both ankles. Went for major surgery in Victoria which took total 14 hours over a couple days. Metal plates and screws all over. Spent a month in hospital. Only 1 hot nurse 😐 But I’m home now. And recovering quickly!”

Cpl. Darren Lagan, spokesman for the Island District RCMP told the Times Colonist the crash “did not result in charges for MacDonald.”
