“That was amazing.” That’s how a taxi passenger described the experience of witnessing three wolves trying to take down some buffalo on Highway 3 between Fort Providence and Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories.

Video captured by nurse Kerry Mercer shows the taxi was on its way to Yellowknife when it encountered a herd of buffalo along the side of the highway. Just as the taxi was approaching the running herd, three wolves fled the scene, likely out of fear.

“Those buffalo got saved by us, eh?”

Wood bison are the largest land mammals in North America. Separate from the American bison, they have larger heads, large shoulder humps and a shaggy brown fur on their shoulders and front legs.

There are three free-ranging wood bison populations in the Northwest Territories. The federal government estimates there are between 7,000 to 10,000 free ranging wild wood bison living in the Northwest Territories, Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.
