Looking for an unique gift idea for that tea or coffee drinker in your life? Or maybe that health nut that always harps on you to eat better? Vancouver-based social venture Wize Monkey produces coffee leaf tea, and it’s causing quite a stir in the organic food and beverage industry.
Never heard of coffee leaf tea?
It’s a revolutionary infusion made of arabica coffee leaves. Wize Monkey ethically sources their leaves from a single-estate farm in Nicaragua that is run by what some would call “The Nicaraguan Santa Claus,” thanks to his jolly demeanour that comes through in his interview. Independent testing has shown that this totally unique brew boasts 17% more antioxidants than green tea and has a very low amount of caffeine, yet provides a very sublte and clean caffeine buzz without a crash. Due to immediate demand, they canceled their Kickstarter campaign and opened their online store instead.
In celebration of their launch, they are offering free shipping until January 1. Make your order by Monday, December 15 and you’ll receive it on or before Christmas eve.
Tea and coffee aficionados have been quickly picking this up as the newest innovation in tea and coffee in recent decades. Most reviews have been quite positive, including this in-depth review on OolongOwl.com.
“Admittedly, I was worried coffee leaf tea would be overly herby or a bitter coffee hell, but Armando’s Original Blend is really smooth and easy to drink with a pleasing amount of sweetness.”
Revolutionizing the coffee industry for better communities
Coffee farms rely on a single harvest season that is typically three-months long. In this season, they hire temporary workers to come pick coffee beans. Once the harvest is over, 90% of their staff have to find other work for the remaining 9 months of the year. This creates incredibly difficult conditions for community development and has caused major famines and economic collapse in the past. Wize Monkey’s goal is to create permanent jobs and stabilize this industry to spark new sustainable development across all coffee producing countries.
Wize Monkey joins leading social venture incubator
Their clever idea and lofty goals have garnered attention from the likes of Vancouver’s finest development programs. Along with 5 other social startups, Wize Monkey’s was selected to join downtown Vancouver’s Innovation Hub. The ‘iHub,’ as it goes, is funded by Coast Capital Savings and operated by the UBC Sauder School of Business.
