Six Port Moody schools in lockdown due to police incident

UPDATE: The police incident in Port Moody has ended with the arrest of a 31-year-old male suspect.

According to Port Moody Police, a report was received at 8:10 a.m. this morning of an assault with a weapon in the Heritage Woods area. The weapon was recovered when the police arrived and a male was treated for minor injuries. However, the suspect was nowhere to be found at the scene.

Nearby schools were placed on a lockdown as a precaution while police and a K9 unit searched for the suspect.

At about 10:30 a.m., a report was made of a robbery at the top of Eagle Mountain where a women’s keys and vehicle were stolen. The suspect in this incident matched the description of the individual responsible for the assault.

The man was arrested moments later, but police say he does not have a prior record. The lockdowns at the school have since been lifted.

Six Port Moody schools have been placed in a lockdown this morning after there were reports of an assault with a weapon in the area.

Police presence is currently centralized around a neighbourhood at Fernway Drive and Birchwood Crescent on Heritage Mountain. A weapon has been recovered in the area, however, nobody has been shot. The suspect is still at large.

Port Moody Police is leading the investigation with the assistance of Coquitlam RCMP.

Residents in the area are being told to stay inside until they have been told by police it is safe. The schools under a precautionary lockdown are Heritage Woods Secondary, Eagle Mountain Middle, Aspenwood Elementary, Anmore Elementary, Pleasantside Elementary and Heritage Mountain Elementary.

“There is a police incident in Port Moody. Schools are functioning as usual and classes are in session,” reads a statement by the Coquitlam School District. “Please be advised that parents are unable to access to schools and students will not be released while in lock down.”
