Earlier today, multiple police departments were involved in a car chase that began in Surrey, where two individuals were stabbed inside a store, and ended in South Vancouver.

The incident began at approximately 9:30 a.m. when Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a shoplifting at the 7100 block of 138 Street, just one block away from Newton Arena where Julie Paskall was killed.

Upon arrival, they discovered two employees had been stabbed and that the suspect had fled on foot. Fortunately, the victims’ injuries were minor of nature but still required hospital treatment.

A short time after the incident at the store, the suspect carjacked a nearby vehicle with the driver still inside. Surrey RCMP issued an alert to all police departments in the Metro Vancouver region and deployed helicopter, dog and emergency response units to pursue the vehicle.

The suspect drove the vehicle to Vancouver with the male driver still inside, who made his escape by jumping out of the vehicle in stopped traffic near the 3300 block of Cambie Street.

Vancouver Police intercepted the vehicle at the intersection of West 33rd Avenue and Cambie Street, but the suspect refused to stop and collided with the police car.

The suspect continued driving southbound on Cambie Street, averting police attempts to stop the vehicle, and fled on foot after colliding with a second police car at West Kent Avenue near Cambie Street – just south of SkyTrain’s Canada Line Station.

He was apprehended on foot in the area at 10:30 a.m. and handed over to Surrey RCMP as the crime spree began in their jurisdiction.

In an unrelated incident, another carjacking occurred in Richmond later in the morning and ended with an arrest at 11:15 a.m. in South Vancouver.

Vancouver Police stopped a BMW at Southeast Marine Drive near Fraser Street and arrested the driver who apparently stole the vehicle in Richmond and collided it with some police vehicles. The suspect was later turned over to Richmond RCMP.
