When was the last time you visited the Royal BC Museum while visiting Victoria? According to Trip Advisor, you have every reason to do so as the museum ranks at the top of their 2014 Traveler’s Choice list for the best museum in Canada.

The museum in Victoria outranked Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum (2nd), Ottawa’s Canadian War Museum (3rd), the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology (6th) and Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario (7th). Campbell River’s museum featuring ethnographic and historic collections from B.C. finished the list at tenth place.

The Royal BC Museum, located within Victoria’s cultural precinct and adjacent to the B.C. legislature, is supported by the provincial government and attracts approximately 400,000 visitors every year.

It is the only natural and human history museum in the province, with a collection of seven million artifacts and 750,000 specimens, and has previously held high-calibre international exhibits of collections from the RMS Titanic, Leonardo da Vinci, Genghis Khan and Vikings. The museum also has an IMAX theatre, which plays both educational and new Hollywood films.

There are plans to significantly expand the Royal BC Museum within the next decade from its existing building area of 379,000 square feet to 895,000 square feet.

In comparison, the Vancouver Art Gallery’s proposal to build a new standalone museum building at downtown Vancouver’s Larwill Park will be 300,000 square feet in size. The new art gallery will be designed by Switzerland-based Herzog & de Meuron, best known for designing Bejing’s Bird Nest and London’s Tate Modern, and is expected to cost approximately $300-million.
