Vancouver fire crews and police were called to Southeast False Creek twice to respond to two overnight fires.

A witness told Vancity Buzz a garbage bin fire began at 1:30 a.m. near False Creek Elementary School, and it eventually consumed an entire shed storing garbage and recycling bins.

Three hours later at 4:30 p.m., a massive fire was detected at the Dragon Boat Society’s storage trailer just south of Science World.

The fire destroyed Dragon Boat Festival equipment that included life jackets, paddles and at least 10 of the organization’s outrigger canoes. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to the trailers storing the irreplaceable dragon boats.

According to Global, the damage to the Dragon Boat Society is estimated to be between $20,000 to $30,000.

Investigators are still at the scene of the boat storage fire to determine the exact cause. There is no word yet on whether the two fires are linked.
