Captain Kirk and Spock are coming to town! The third instalment of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek film series will be filmed in Vancouver.

According to fan website Trek Movie, production for the sequel will mainly occur in Vancouver and other locations in British Columbia. A small portion of the film will be shot in Seoul, Korea.

Director Roberto Orci was in Vancouver this week scouting locations. J.J. Abrams directed the first two movies, however, he has opted out of directing the third movie as he is preoccupied with Star Wars Episode VII. However, Abrams will remain with the project as a producer.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will reprise their respective roles. There is also speculation that William Shatner will return to play the role of an old Captain Kirk in a similar fashion to Leonard Nimoy’s time traveling roles in the previous two films.

Both Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) were both filmed in the Los Angeles area. The 2013 film had a budget of $185-million and a similar budget is expected for the third movie, which will be a boon for Vancouver’s film production industry and local economy.

Bad Robot, a production company owned by J.J. Abrams, reportedly chose Vancouver due to “very generous tax incentives” that could potentially save the film tens of millions of dollars. New Enterprise sets will be built in Vancouver as shipping and rebuilding the pieces will be more costly.

Vancouver has been a favourite location for Bad Robot’s film and television productions. The company shot parts of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol in the city in addition to television series that include Fringe, Almost Human and Alcatraz.
